Susu Diapers Anyone?

| December 14, 2009 | 5 Comments

I was passing by through the Saddar area a few days ago when I had to stop on a signal. While I was waiting for the signal to turn green, a saw a delivery truck on the opposite side of the road. The truck was painted in red and had some brand name written on it. Since I always have a craving to read stuff on the billboards and the surrounding areas when I pass by some place, I waited for the signal to open so that I could move closer and read what the delivery truck branding actually had to say. And when I finally did go closer after the light turned green … I read it and … I couldn’t stop laughing on the brand name. SUSU Diapers anyone?

Although I can recall reading about SUSU DIAPERS a while back, but this refreshed my memory. I don’t know if this is a good brand name… but yes… it does directly target the consumer by being obvious in its functional aspect. Of course this brand would not be trying to compete against the giants like Pampers and Huggies, but it still has a big target market to cater to. I am not sure about the price of this product, but as far as my assumption is concerned.. it would have a lower price point. I manages to find only one picture of this brand when I googled for it and would like to credit this post for that: http://potato-party.blogspot.com/2008/08/of-aptly-named-diapers.html

Although we do laugh on brands like Gaye Soap, but such brands have been doing very well in the markets they cater. Is ‘Susu Diapers’ a similar brand? Or do you really think its a hilarious name to launch a brand with…?

    It’s a Chinese brand . . . so let’s think in Chinese for a while . . . but it could be more related to benefit branding here . . .
Chinese have a habit of flooding products and they do not usually feel like having market research regarding names . . .
There is a shop keeper in my area, he got so angry at the brand name that he stopped stocking this product . . .
Also, we were told that a particular brand of tooth paste failed during it’s launch phase in a country because yellow teeth are a sign of beauty there . . . so you see the consequences of not doing market research. :D

Absurd, bizarre call it what you wanna! But the susu thing has got what it takes to go viral.

@ Hiba: Yes its an imported Chinese brand. I’m not sure if its ordered by the company in Pakistan and sold under the name “Susu.” Because Chinese won’t be able t relate to Susu how we do .. lol .. I do agree to you on the market research part .. but isnt that a common term for the masses? How I have started to understand all the local marketing being done here .. is like name the product close to how people should feel about it .. rather than naming it as a flashy brand name.. and it clicks.. terms and names like: A-One Karak Chai, Gaye Soap, Lagay Tha Karke, etc…. have worked in this country in specific markets they were trying to cater to … so why no Susu? …lol =P

@ Hyder: It definitely has the potential to go viral … its all how the marketing team wants to leverage the brand name.. hehe

yes indeed i can understand your feelings as a marketing student myself . . . that is who I am in a business school . . . :P

At times, Marketing as a course becomes synonymous with ‘begging’ when you flood research questionnaires requesting people to fill them but that painful phase makes sure that the product does not end up having such a name :D

So you see research is very important . . . try doing it and you’ll come to know :P
