“Zong Competing With Telefun…”

It’s interesting how companies can compete to have not just advertisements but advertisements that are annoying enough to get people to sing their jingles andthen hate themselves for doing it.  It might perform all functions, that is, inform, persuade and remind, however persuasion is something that might fail altogether . . . ah Telefun! It might have persuaded some of us and later persuaded parents to take action after having a look at the phone bill .

Recently, Zong seems to be competing with Telefun in this regard. It shows a vintage style advertisement that seems to have a lasting impression in the minds of even those people who occasionally watch TV and get to hear it most often because somebody else in the family is watching it. Oh! And it goes on and on . . . “Baby daddy sey! Baby mummy sey! Mummy daddy sey . . . Daddy baby sey! Their one liner, “Three people call, one pays for all !” seems pretty scary coupled with a monthly subscription charge of Rs. 799 + tax . . . “Family Pack”. Well anything that makes a family and a home is always costly.

However,  criticisms could wonderfully relate to it. First of all, the era they have shown is nice an advanced for a mobile phone . . . a mobile phone which is wireless and not analog in a black and white time, it’s just like making someone wear a digital watch for the movie, Titanic. Then this advertisement could be related well to China for a one child per family concept, Pakistan can allow two children per family at least for the sake of advertisements if not beyond that. So are they discriminating? And you can change your family pack number once every thirty days only, so if daddy wants to include his second child, the triangle of package need would only allow that one to be included after thirsty days once daddy removes the first child from his subscription.  This could imply, they are limiting their target market, especially when high use rate demands more people to be included in this package maybe . . . Majority of families would definitely have more than one child.

These advertisements imprint themselves in your subconscious mind and pop out during thought processes of brain air time; during exams, while traveling, during a get together and the most horrifying situation of all . . . is when it flickers into your teacher’s mind during a marketing class . . . you could be asked to manage an assignment on such things.

Therefore . . . “Baby daddy sey! Baby mummy sey! Mummy daddy sey . . . Daddy baby sey!

Brand loyal customers of Zong come kill me . . . Tata!

There’s been a lot of buzz lately about the newly launched Ufone UConnect service, so I figured I’d share my perspective too. First off, the service is AWESOME. Truly. The breadth of capabilities that it brings to an inexpensive mobile phone is incredibly impressive to say the least. The problem with sophisticated applications like this, though, is that you don’t know where to start describing them since they do so much!
