Coca-Cola Re-Affirms Its Commitment on Water Conservation in Pakistan on World Water Day

Karachi, March 30, 2010: Coca-Cola has re-affirmed its commitment to water conservation in Pakistan on the World Water Day that is being celebrated around the world on March 22.
The company has initiated several project and joined hands with world-renowned organizations in Pakistan to help conserve water.
Coca-Cola has partnered with WWF Pakistan for a unique project to improve sub-watershed management and environmental awareness in Ayubia National Park. The project focuses on water conservation through sub-watershed management. This vital environmental project undertaken with Coca-Cola’s intervention, has thus yielded several benefits, including conservation of water resources, preservation of the park’s flora and fauna, and awareness building or education of the local communities and visitors to the park.
Under the project the local community has been provided with water filtration plants that are benefitting about 10,000 people on a daily basis. The local communities have been provided help in roof water harvesting and storage schemes.
Expressing his views, Rizwan U. Khan, Country Manager, Pakistan & Afghanistan, The Coca-Cola Export Corporation, said, “Water is a resource under great pressure and the situation in Pakistan is fast becoming critical. For us at Coca-Cola water conservation is extremely important. In Pakistan and globally as well, we are working with our bottling partners and communities to preserve this natural resource”.
As part of its relief efforts for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) of Swat, Coca-Cola donated a water filtration plant that was installed at a government school in Haripur.
On its operations side, the company has undertaken Rinse Water Elimination project to reduce water consumption in beverage production. Coca-Cola is also using sterile air to clean the bottles to minimize water usage in its operations and has also initiated its Clean In Place optimization to reduce the number of steps to clean the equipment and the place so that less water is used.
The international observance of World Water Day is an initiative that grew out of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro. The overall goal of the World Water Day on 22 March 2010 campaign is to raise the profile of water quality so that water quality considerations are made alongside those of water quantity.
