Scent Marketing II… Lets Pick That Nose People!!

| July 16, 2010 | 2 Comments

I’m sorry for grossing all of you out but I just couldn’t resist :D . For all those who didn’t read my last article check it out here!. A little recap on the previous article would be that how ‘scent marketing’ is becoming a key discussion area for marketers across the globe. I mentioned earlier that I wanted this to be a series of articles so here I am writing to get the next article in, while other people around me are happily sipping on their morning cup of tea.

One of our key senses is the sense of smell, which is tied to our emotions and therefore we tend to recall more things that have a certain scent associated with them. Marketers have been knowingly and unknowingly using this to their advantage. However, while researching deeper into scent marketing I came across an example that blew my mind. For years Real Estate Agents would put a freshly baked pie or freshly baked cookies on the kitchen counter or in the oven. As families walked into the house they would get this faint smell they found pleasing, a smell that would instantly trigger a sense of belonging and a sense of a homely environment. They would imagine living in that house eating freshly baked cookies, having dinner with the family sitting on the sofa while watching TV.

Now you may ask how can just putting a pie in an oven achieve so much, but the truth is the sense of smell can work wonders. Let’s try a little experiment if your a pizzaholic like me. Imagine the first thing that hits you when you sit down at your favourite pizza eatery (be it pizza hut or any other). As soon as you enter the door, the first thing that hits you is the smell of a freshly baked pizza and you just cannot wait to bite into your first juicey slice of it! Wait a minute!! I hope you didn’t bite into it cause u have to order it first… haha :D . But I hope you get my point of how the scent/smell can trigger a sense of anticipation in you.

Another example could be when you walk into a ritsey hotel your almost always greeted by the scent of fresh flowers. This is to increase your overall feel about the place and to make you feel welcomed, with a hope that you may choose them again for your stay, and have a positive perception.

Scent Marketing goes way past what normal words can achieve sometimes, and right now we are just scratching at the surface. I hope 3 of my loyal readers can digest this information :P … In the next article I will talk about how famous brands you know are experimenting with scent marketing.
Now go and order some pizza cause youve made me hungry too :@

    Hi,

Your piece on scent marketing makes sense but allow me to quote from my article Media Untruths Nov-Dec 07 Aurora.

“6. Media solutions: Here’s a thought; novel or not, I’m not sure. We have five senses. Sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell, so why are we only looking at sight and sound? In the future we should explore these other equally powerful senses, especially smell. Recently in France a leading perfume company added a new element to their airport signs; that of smell. The signs had dispensers which sprayed passers-by with samples of the new fragrance. Could we do the same? Why not just imagine a sign for Pizza Hut that actually gives off the smell of Chicken Fajita –if you ask me I’d probably be hooked! As for touch and taste, there have been award winning campaigns that involved sense-based concepts. Another sense we can employ is the cultural sense we claim to have. No need to make fancy, out of context, campaigns. Our culture is rich enough to give us local solutions.

At Lowe one of the seven creative principles is, “Be radical but be relevant.” This applies to all aspects of the advertising process – creative, media, brand activation. You might wow your target audience with over the top ideas, but is it worth it if you turn off the other members of the public?

Of course, before we can use all our ‘senses’ to enrich our campaigns we need another sense – common sense. And we all know how common that is!’

    Need I say more?

    Hi Tyrone

I am trying to grasp the basic concept from your quote. I believe you are also justifiyng that it is sensory marketing that is going to be the next frontier. But it needs to be done in a very refined and productive way.
As I mentioned I was gonig to incorporate ad few more examples of famous brands who are pushing the envelope when it comes to scent marketing.
One example I would like to quote here:
“Companies are using custom designed fragrances to differentiate their products and enhance their customers’ experiences.
Example: A convenient store chain was having trouble promoting their new coffee offering. They consulted with a fragrance manufacturer and began offering shoppers a whiff of coffee aroma when they entered the store. Coffee sales rose by 55 percent”.

I do not have the exact source of this example but I hope I have done it justice by saying that this is not my research.

We are chess pieces in the great scheme of things my friend and I believe Sensory marketing is where we ought to be soon. Scent marketing is just one door I say lets open em all :D

Damn this feels like an article now :P
